Apple Spice Donuts

Fall isn't over yet! Make sure you find time to bake these delicious and easy donuts to satisfy your sweet-tooth! Or feel free to make them whenever, I won't tell anyone!

Growing up in Hawaii, I never really ate pastries unless they were Malasadas from Leonard’s Bakery, Poi Donuts from Kamehameha Bakery, or Apple Naples from Zippys. It wasn’t until I moved to Colorado for college did my crazy pastry, baked goods, and specifically donuts craze started. I became obsessed and would crave them all the time. I could be full to the brim and if someone mentioned donuts I would already be starting to loosen my top button to make some room!

Therefore, I found it only fitting for me to invest in buying some very cheap and affordable silicon baking donut molds to create my own donuts at home. It took me a few months to finally actually use the molds, but I am so happy with how easy it was to bake some delicious donuts! Also, adding to the spirit of fall, I decided to create some fun Apple Spice Donuts!

Here’s the 411 for those not familiar with the stars of this recipe:

  • Whole Wheat Pastry Flour: This is not the same as Whole Wheat Flour, instead this is lighter and will result in less dense bakes. You are welcome to substitute any flour of your choice whether it is gluten-free or all-purpose but it will result in a different texture.
  • Coconut Sugar: I used a dark Coconut Sugar because I had this on hand; however, you may use any type of sugar (cane, brown, etc.).
  • Pan: I used a 6 count silicone donut mold.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 6 donuts

INGREDIENTS

Donuts

  • 2 1/2 c Whole Wheat Pastry Flour (may use any type of flour; All-Purpose, Gluten-Free)
  • 5 tsp Baking Powder
  • 2 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Ginger Powder
  • 3/4 c Maple Syrup
  • 1 1/2 c Apple Sauce
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract

Maple Glaze

  • 1/2 c Powdered Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Maple Syrup

Cinnamon Sugar

  • 1/4 c Coconut Sugar (may use any type of sugar)
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Prepare baking pan with oil to prevent sticking (do not need oil for silicon molds).
  2. In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger).
  3. In a separate large bowl, combine all wet ingredients (maple syrup, apple sauce, vanilla extract).
  4. Slowly add and mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until well incorporated.
  5. Transfer mixture into a piping bag (optional, but much easier to fill molds) and pipe mixture into donut molds evenly, filling up to about 3/4 of the mold.
  6. Place donuts into the oven and bake for 8 – 10 minutes or until golden brown. May use the toothpick test (insert a toothpick and make sure when you pull it out it is clean) to make sure donuts are baked all the way through.
  7. Remove donuts from oven and cool completely on a cooling rack before decorating.
  8. In a small bowl, mix together sugar and cinnamon, then set aside for later.
  9. In a medium bowl, mix together Maple Glaze ingredients. Once donuts are completely cooled, dip each donut halfway down into the icing. Then sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture on top. Set aside to harden and repeat for the remaining donuts.

If you decide to bake these donuts or recreate them into muffins or donut holes, I hope you ENJOY them regardless and all the warm, delicious, and fall flavors!
